City and School District Expand Summer Programs for Youth Engagement
The Allentown School District and the City of Allentown are collaborating on various summer programming and youth engagement initiatives. The Parks and Recreation Department offers a free, 112-year-old summer playground program with over 500 registered youth, including sports, dancing, field trips, and a new safety around water program with swim lessons funded by the Allentown Partnership and YMCA. The school district provides its own summer programming for approximately 1,800 students, focusing on exposure to new cultures, academic enhancement in small skill groups, a kindergarten academy, expanded elementary athletics, an Algebra Academy, and an AI Institute in partnership with Penn State Lehigh Valley. The Allentown Youth Internship Corps places over 100 students in city departments and community businesses, with a focus on healthcare and government pathways. Both entities collaborate on marketing and program alignment, aiming for a 'one Allentown' summer experience that keeps youth engaged and safe.
City Outlines Extensive Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Improvements for School Areas
The City of Allentown's Public Works Department presented an overview of current and planned projects focused on traffic and pedestrian safety, particularly around schools. Projects include the School Zone Upgrade Project for 25 schools, the School ADA Ramp Project, the 17th Street Corridor Project (including two hospitals and two schools), the 15th Street Corridor Project (with an overhead pedestrian flashing device for Trusseler Mill School), and the Lehigh and Union Intersection Improvement Project. A speed cushion pilot program is underway with installations near schools. Pavement marking seasons prioritize school crosswalks, and school zone signs and flashing devices are maintained. Collaboration efforts with the school district for traffic safety reviews and designated walking routes were also highlighted. Grant applications for corridor improvements are pending.
