Brad Miller from the Pinal County Attorney's Office presented a comprehensive analysis of criminal cases prosecuted in Apache Junction from 2023 to 2025. The analysis revealed an overall increase in criminal cases filed, with a significant rise in higher-impact criminal activity and a notable increase in misdemeanors. Drug offenses, while still the largest category, saw a percentage decline in their share of total cases. Violent crime presented a mixed picture with stable assaults but increases in weapons offenses and robberies, while homicides decreased. Several categories showed rapid increases, including DUIs, family offenses, sexual offenses, and criminal damage. The emergence of child sex trafficking cases in 2025 was also highlighted. Miller emphasized that the increase in numbers is likely due to the proactive efforts of the Apache Junction Police Department. The presentation also identified geographic hotspots for crime, with Walmart being a persistent issue, followed by the US60 corridor and areas around Idaho Road and Royal Palm. Miller discussed the challenges of tracking data related to illegal immigrants and homelessness, and noted that drug cases are generally decreasing, disabusing the notion of Apache Junction as the 'meth capital.' The office is seeking very high punishments for repeat offenders and those committing serious crimes, sometimes offering no plea deals. Future strategies will focus on coordinated multi-agency efforts and expanding prevention programs. The office also plans to make all data available online and through spreadsheets. A police lieutenant from Mesa thanked Miller for his thorough work and commitment to charging crimes appropriately.

Sophie Dassar from Florence Copper presented an update on their operations and community benefits. She discussed the growing demand for copper, driven by renewable energy, national defense, and new technologies like artificial intelligence, projecting a 50% increase in demand by 2040 and a potential supply gap. Florence Copper is positioned as a significant new domestic source of copper. Dassar explained their insitu copper recovery process, which differs from traditional mining by having a smaller environmental footprint, using less energy, emitting less carbon and dust, and using significantly less water. The process involves dissolving copper minerals underground and bringing a liquid solution to the surface for processing into copper cathodes. Florence Copper is ramping up production to an average annual capacity of 85 million pounds with a 22-year mine life, contributing approximately 5% to US refined copper production. Economically, the project is projected to contribute $4.3 billion to Arizona's economy, with $2.5 billion concentrated in Pinal County. The company has grown from 35 to over 200 employees, with a majority hired locally. Florence Copper also highlighted its community involvement, including donations to local nonprofits and a scholarship program for Apache Junction high school seniors. Dassar expressed excitement for continued collaboration with Apache Junction.
