The Memorial Highway project is nearing completion, with Phase 1 on the east end scheduled to wrap up on July 9th. Finishing touches like sidewalks, a multi-use trail, and landscaping are being addressed. On the west end, traffic patterns have shifted due to underground utility work and the contractor Northern Improvement moving in. Motorists are reminded to slow down in construction zones and plan for potential delays. Additionally, stop signs were removed at the intersection of 14th Street and Collins Avenue to gather traffic pattern data, with analysis ongoing to determine the best solution. The First Street reconstruction project is also progressing, involving concrete paving and underground utility work, though a delay was encountered due to unexpected pipe issues. This project is in conjunction with the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
Mandan Delivers Spectacular 4th of July Celebration for America's 250th
Mandan celebrated America's 250th 4th of July with extensive festivities. The July 3rd Pyro Musical Fireworks Show was a notable success, with plans to repeat it next year due to its popularity. The event required significant planning and resources, with kudos given to security, planning staff, and event personnel for ensuring safety and a great experience. Access to a large property for the fireworks show was provided by Dr. Belanger and others. Various other events contributed to the celebration, including baseball games, the rodeo, Art in the Park, a parade, and a road race with nearly a thousand runners. The city's Main Street was lined with an estimated 50,000 people for the parade. A float constructed by city departments, including City Hall, Fire Station, and Public Works, was a highlight of the parade. Ginormous American and North Dakota flags, carried by numerous volunteers, were also featured. Skydivers from Fargo, operating out of the Mandan airport, added to the aerial displays. The fireworks contractor's signature 'fireballs' were a hit, delivering intense heat and visual spectacle, similar to a New Year's Eve display. Despite a severe hailstorm and rain on the afternoon of July 3rd, the evening turned out to be gorgeous and perfect.
Employee Recognition Held; Bids Awarded for Reservoir Coding and Landfill Excavation; Wastewater Plant Expansion Planning Underway
The city recognized 14 employees for their years of service, ranging from 3 to 30 years, during a quarterly employee recognition event. Most employees were able to attend with their families. The city views this recognition as a key part of employee retention. Separately, bids for the Southside Reservoir coding project came in higher than expected, but with five competitive bids, the project was awarded. A budget amendment of $30,000-$40,000 was made to facilitate the project. The AE2S firm has been engaged for the wastewater treatment plant expansion project at a cost of approximately $1.8 to $1.9 million, with the total project cost estimated to be over $100 million. The landfill is seeking authorization for bids for excavation to create a new 3-to-5-year pit, which is expected to extend the landfill's life.
