Fire Department to Host 'Fire and Splash Summer Bash' for Community Engagement

Parks Department Announces Upcoming Sports Camp and Pool Open House
During the department head reports, Parks Director Eric Tislin provided updates on upcoming park events. A sports camp is scheduled for the week of July 13th-16th at the Rec Plex for children entering first through sixth grade. Additionally, an open house for the pool is planned for Thursday, July 9th, with sessions from noon to 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dankwork pool. Residents are invited to view pool concepts, displays, and provide input. Food trucks will also be present at the pool open house.

Council Member Pro-Tem highlighted an upcoming free community event: a concert by the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra at Cra Park on Saturday, July 11th, starting at 8:00 p.m. The event is family-friendly and typically attracts a large crowd, filling the park, and will feature music and fireworks. He also noted that the recent Fourth of July celebrations seemed more subdued compared to previous years, potentially due to changes in fireworks ordinances, and that the cleanup appeared to be efficient.
Council Member Scott Reflects on City's Financial History and Recovery Strategies
Council Member Scott provided historical context regarding the city's financial recovery, referencing discussions about debt incurred in the early 2000s. He stated that in the 1980s and 1990s, significant efforts were made to address financial issues and infrastructure needs, including passing taxes like the local option sales tax, hotel motel tax, and Schmidt tax, and securing income from the casino. Scott believes these initiatives contributed to offsetting financial crises. He also noted the loss of income from the bridge in '92 impacted street work funding. He expressed a desire to move past the financial crisis of the early 2000s, disagreeing with the notion that it was solely created then.
Resident Raises Concerns Over Park Shelter House Location, Basketball Court Usage
During the public comment period, a resident, Susan Vanpel, expressed concerns regarding the proposed location for a new open-air shelter house (Agenda Item #12). She questioned why a portion of a basketball court, which she noted has two hoops cut down, would be used for the shelter house, arguing that it takes away from facilities used by children. Vanpel suggested that an alternative location for the shelter house, such as next to the pickleball court, could be considered to avoid removing the basketball court space. She also inquired about the timeline for installing lights at the basketball court, which she was previously told would eventually be put up.
