Canton Select Board Authorizes Over $825,000 in Fund Transfers to Cover Departmental Deficits
The Select Board approved the transfer of $600,000 from the reserve fund and authorized departmental transfers totaling $225,026.39 to address year-end budget deficits in several departments. The largest deficit was in snow and ice removal ($678,131), attributed to above-average winter conditions. Other departments with deficits included town council, police, fire and ambulance, streetlights, Norfolk Aggie School, and a COVID-19 CARES Act grant. Surpluses from the Board of Health, library, elections/registrars, and veterans departments helped offset some of the deficits. The town council deficit is expected to be a one-time occurrence due to overlap between old and new councils.
Muffin House Cafe Receives Common Victual License; Several Appointments Made by Select Board
The Select Board approved the Common Victual License for the Muffin House Cafe, located at 22 Washington Street. The Vice President of Muffin House Cafe, Josh Shasnick, stated that contractors are finishing up and anticipates an opening in the week of July 13th, pending final inspections. The board also approved a livery license for Bosa Luxury Guide LLC. Additionally, the board appointed Susan Jodadins as Tax Title Custodian, Allison Poderski to several committees, Meg Goldstein to the Comprehensive Water Resource Management Plan Committee, Kopal Chabra to the Master Plan Implementation Committee, and Gene Manning to the Permit Advisory Committee. Allison Poderski was also appointed as Town Accountant.
Select Board Approves Meeting Minutes, Notes Financials, Discusses Infrastructure and Cooling Centers
The Select Board addressed various administrative items, including approving minutes from previous meetings, noting vendor and payroll warrant totals, approving cemetery lot perpetual care deeds, and discussing upcoming milling and paving work. The town administrator provided an update on cooling centers due to a projected heat wave, noting the library closure for construction and advising residents to check the town website or call Parks and Rec for aquatic center hours. A reminder was given about municipal offices closing for Independence Day. A veterinarian's plea was made to consider the impact of backyard fireworks on pets.
Canton Fall Classic Road Race Approved; Select Board Accepts $5,000 Gift for Summer Programs
The Select Board approved the request to hold the Canton Fall Classic Road Race on October 25th, 2026, starting at 1301 Washington Street. The route involves parts of Washington Street and Pleasant Street. The race will be one lap for the 5K and two laps for the 10K. Approval was contingent on police and fire approval and a certificate of insurance. Alan Mapperfoot of Bene Tikva noted a compromise with the police department for public safety, aiming to minimize impact on citizens and churches. The board also approved accepting a $5,000 gift from the Canton Helpline for Parks and Recreation Community Summer Programs.
Canton Select Board Approves CASA's Awareness Campaign for Overdose Awareness Day
The Canton Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CASA) requested permission to place purple ribbons and signs throughout Canton during August to raise awareness for International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31st. The event, a 'Celebration of Life,' will be held on the front lawn of the Canton Senior Center on August 27th at 7 p.m. CASA also requested permission to place signs at various public buildings and on public land. The Select Board approved the request, with one member noting that the train station location was not within the town's authority to permit, but agreeing to proceed with other approved locations.
