Charlton to Consider Sending Letter to Legislature Advocating for Independent Audit
Resident Bonnie Cipher requested that the Select Board send a letter to the Massachusetts legislature urging them to implement an independent audit of the legislature by the state auditor, as approved by Massachusetts voters in November 2024. Charlton residents voted 70.24% in favor of the audit, and statewide, nearly 72% of voters supported it. The motion to send the letter was made, seconded, and passed by consensus to be added as an agenda item for the next meeting.
National Grid and Verizon Granted Permission for New Poles; Water Sewer Commissioner Appointed
The Select Board held public hearings and approved requests from Massachusetts Electric Company (National Grid) and Verizon New England, Inc. to install joint poles for new residential services on Baker Pond Road and Samson Road. Both requests were approved by the police chief and DPW superintendent, with no comments or concerns received from abutters. The board also voted to appoint Paul Gagner as a Water Sewer Commission member until the May 2027 annual town election.
Select Board Approves Special Event Licenses and Pavement Surfacing Bid
The Select Board reviewed and approved several action items, including granting special alcoholic beverage licenses for events and awarding a bid for pavement surfacing. A special alcoholic beverage license was approved for Monarch Orchards for a 'Touch a Truck' event on August 22, 2026, with conditions for alcohol delivery and pickup. Another license was approved for the Brunell Cashman wedding at Camp Joslin/Barton Center on September 26, 2026, with similar conditions. The bid for pavement surfacing of various streets was awarded to Massachusetts Broken Stone for $59,100 for the period of July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
Bay Path Vocational School Presents FY27 Budget Amidst Financial Constraints
Superintendent Kyle Ber provided an update on the Bay Path Vocational Technical High School's FY27 operating budget of $31,358,852, which remains unchanged from previous presentations. He addressed budgetary constraints, including an unprecedented nearly 40% increase in Hampshire Group Insurance Trust costs, leading to the need for cuts. Despite these challenges, the district aims to maintain services and has not requested assessments above the minimum local contribution. The school will not have a School Resource Officer next year due to budget limitations, but they aim to reinstate the position when feasible. The budget is still awaiting the governor's signature.
