Police Authority Receives Grant, Awards Audit Services Contract, and Conducts Safety Training
The Police Authority held its regular monthly meeting on June 15th. Captain Paluchi delivered a safety presentation on 'kids home alone and babysitting' classes through Thomas More University. The department received a $10,000 grant from the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security and was awarded several vests from the Kentucky Attorney General's office. The authority reviewed bachelor's degrees, opened bids for audit services, and selected Chamberlain Owen for future audit services. An executive session was held at the end of the meeting.
City Council Considers Amendments to Architectural Review Board and City Code
The City Council considered an amendment to Chapter 34 of the city code, updating language related to the Architectural Review Board and other miscellaneous items. The amendment aims to align the code with the new zoning ordinance and streamline processes. Key changes include reducing the Architectural Review Board from five to three members due to difficulties in finding members and clarifying definitions of outdoor recreational buildings versus detached garages. Window signage regulations were also standardized to be consistent with business park zones, allowing up to 20% of windows on one facade. The Planning Commission recommended approval of these changes. The item is set for a second reading in August.
City Celebrates 75th Anniversary with Scavenger Hunt and Parades; Recycling Collection Adjusts for Heat
The city's 75th anniversary celebration included a scavenger hunt organized by the Recreation Committee, which had 20 participants and has distributed all gift cards. Committee members also participated in the Fort Mitchell and Edgewood parades, which were described as joyful experiences. Additionally, regarding recycling, residents are advised to put their cans out the night before due to the heat, as Remky may collect them earlier than usual. The contract allows for dispensing with normal pickup rules during extreme heat.
New Restaurants Open, Others Planned; Small Business Incentive Program in Use
The Economic Development Committee reported on recent business activity. Torres Mexican Steakhouse has recently opened and appears to be doing well. Malone Steakhouse has put up 'coming soon' signage and is expected to open by the holiday season. The committee is also in discussions with two potential businesses that could utilize the city's small business incentive program, with announcements expected soon.
Fire Departments Highlight Internship Success and Staffing Updates
Both the Fort Mitchell and Edgewood fire departments reported on their activities. Chief Hampton mentioned that two college interns were hired full-time by local fire departments: Parker Mason at Union and Tory Nelner at Covington, highlighting the success of their internship program in feeding into local departments. Chief Tickman reported that June was a busy month with 12 public education events in Edgewood and Crestview Hills. They also lost an intern to the city of Covington and are currently accepting applications for a full-time firefighter medic as a current staff member also moved to Covington. Both chiefs emphasized that their internship programs benefit not only their departments but the broader Northern Kentucky fire service by helping to address applicant pool difficulties. Discussion also touched on why firefighters might transition to larger departments like Covington, citing factors such as pay, benefits, multiple stations, and 'big city life.'
