Defiance City Council Approves Online Permitting and Payment System
The Defiance City Council approved an ordinance authorizing a contract for an online permitting and payment program. This new system, spearheaded by Zoning Commissioner Nikki Warkentien, aims to increase efficiency for both city staff and the public by allowing online applications and payments at any time. The implementation is expected to take 60 days, with an initial cost of $11,000 plus a $3,500 setup fee for the current calendar year, and an annual cost of $25,000 starting May of the following year. Council members expressed support, anticipating time and cost savings for residents, contractors, and the city, potentially leading to more permits being issued.
Defiance Considers Moratorium on Data Center Development Amid Zoning Concerns
The Defiance City Council discussed the potential for data center development within the city. Dr. Rebecca Roop presented concerns about the lack of specific zoning for data centers, the speed at which land was annexed and zoned for manufacturing, and the potential negative impacts of hyperscale data centers on local infrastructure, utilities, and residents. She advocated for a moratorium on data center development to allow the city time to update its zoning laws and establish better negotiation positions. Council member Hancock motioned to have City Attorney O'Donnell draft legislation for a 12-month moratorium on data centers, cryptocurrency, and Bitcoin mining, which was seconded and will be prepared for future review and potential adoption.
