East Lansing Council Authorizes Litigation Counsel and Addresses Public Safety Concerns Regarding Police Chief
The City Council entered into a closed session to consult with city attorneys regarding privileged legal correspondence and collective bargaining negotiations. Following the closed session, the council authorized Mayor Altman to proceed with the city attorney's recommendation to retain Tim Ferran and Cummings, McClory Davis, Aucho, PLC as litigation defense counsel for the lawsuit Lyonsmith and Mason Woods versus John Newman and the City of East Lansing, case number 26-3081-AW, and other necessary matters to protect the city's legal position [cite: 32, 52, 57]. During public comment, residents expressed strong sentiments regarding the performance and leadership of City Manager Robert Bellman, and specifically called for the termination of Police Chief Jennifer Brown due to alleged patterns of racist policing, cultural issues within the department, and racially motivated and biased conduct affecting various communities [cite: 64, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 81, 85, 87, 89]. Concerns were also raised about the handling of specific incidents, including the alleged shooting of a young black man [cite: 98, 99, 100, 101, 102].
