She proposed inviting Swim Life representatives to a future meeting and sharing resources on social media. The council also addressed safety protocols for volunteers working with children, with Councilwoman Nicely posing questions about background checks, liability insurance coverage for abuse and molestation, and abuse prevention training. Aaron Clemens, an adult on the autism spectrum and an autism advocate, requested that the city of Erlanger officially recognize Autism Awareness and Acceptance Day (April 2nd) and Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month (April) beginning in 2027. Suggestions for community recognition include lighting buildings blue, sharing stories from the autism community, and educating the local community about autism through displays or training.
New Dog Park Ribbon Cutting, Bike Park Nearing Completion, and Fire Department Shift Change Announced
The Amber Run Dog Park ribbon cutting is scheduled for Thursday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The mayor thanked the public works department for their efforts in laying sod for the first time, as well as Tim Aubrey for creating an irrigation system and Bob Martin for designing the 'eons of puppy love' banners. The bike park, developed by Dave Huff of Innovative Dirt Solutions, is nearing completion and will feature a thousand-foot jump line, a pump track, and a beginner skills course. The Sherborn Park parking lot, with six spots, is also complete. The fire department is transitioning to a 24/7 shift schedule to improve work-life balance and recruitment/retention. Significant road and sidewalk improvements on Narrow's Road are also nearing completion.
Erlanger Council Debates Front Yard Fencing for Autism Safety, Explores Legal Pathways
The council discussed a request regarding front yard fencing for individuals with autistic children, specifically addressing safety concerns related to elopement. Melissa, grandmother of a 5-year-old autistic non-verbal granddaughter, shared her fear of her child running off and the need for a barrier. Michelle highlighted the constant demands on parents of autistic children and the perceived inconsideration of the current ADA process. City Administrator Jack Gatlin stated there appears to be an existing legal pathway for disability-related front yard fencing requests, but codifying it city-wide would require a formal text amendment. Councilwoman Fields is investigating the permit process by submitting her own application for a front yard fence permit.
Erlanger Adopts Updated Accounting and Investment Policies, Approves Lease Agreement
The council approved a municipal order amending the accounting policies and procedures manual and adopting investment policies. These updates involve a robust overhaul of the accounting policies, driven by input from new auditors, and the formalization of an investment policy. Both are considered standard practice for cities and provide more robust policies for the future. Additionally, a resolution was passed authorizing a master municipal lease agreement (number 17170) with Lease Servicing, Inc. (DBA NCL Government Capital) for budgeted items.
