Larimer County's iCare Plan Shows Progress in Sustainability Initiatives

Larimer County is providing an update on its internal climate action resilience and education plan, referred to as iCare. The plan involves 15 county departments and aims to make internal operations more sustainable. Updates include progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, waste reduction, and promoting sustainable practices. Specific projects highlighted include upgrades to the jail's HVAC system, installation of air curtains, roof replacements with energy-efficient materials at the ranch, and the upcoming geothermal system for emergency services. The ranch is also piloting robotic mowers, which are more energy-efficient and reduce waste by acting as fertilizer. The county has met its goal for electric vehicle charging stations and is setting a new goal for 2030. The landfill is expanding its methane collection system with a $2.1 million grant. Sustainable purchasing efforts are ongoing, with an increase in eco-friendly product purchases despite a decrease in overall spending with certain vendors. The county has made progress in widening road shoulders for cyclist safety and completed a significant paved trail connector. Fleet services are transitioning to alternative fuel vehicles, with a fleet analysis being conducted by the National Laboratory of the Rockies to further optimize this transition. The ranch is implementing electric bikes, trikes, EV golf carts, and an electric shuttle bus to improve mobility and reduce emissions on its large campus. Employee engagement in sustainability is being fostered through educational series, e-waste drives, and improved bicycle parking. Water usage at county facilities has decreased significantly due to turf replacement projects and the use of drought-tolerant native plants. Emergency management is focusing on community preparedness and educational events.
