City of Fort Morgan Implements Budget Cuts and Hiring Freeze Amidst Cargill Plant Closure
The City of Fort Morgan is modifying its 2026 and 2027 budget calendar due to the ongoing closure of the Cargill plant, which has resulted in a significant loss of revenue. The city is implementing an immediate hiring freeze for 2026 and freezing unstarted or unapproved capital budget items. Departments are required to cut 5% from their remaining 2026 budgets. For 2027, departments must reduce their budgets by 15% from 2026 levels, with the potential for reductions in force (layoffs) if Cargill does not reopen. The city anticipates a potential loss of $15 million in revenue on a $100 million budget if Cargill remains closed. The city manager is working with legal counsel on layoff procedures. A reworked budget calendar will be formally adopted at the next meeting, with budget presentations reflecting the necessary reductions beginning in August.
Police Department Reports High Call Volume in June, Notes Decrease in Fireworks Complaints
The Police Department reported handling over 3,000 calls for service in June, with record numbers in several areas. This included 603 traffic contacts, aligning with the city's traffic safety goals. The department also engaged in 316 community policing contacts, such as officers interacting with residents. There were 15 DUIs last month, related to traffic enforcement. The department noted a significant decrease in fireworks-related calls between July 3rd and 4th, with only 33 calls compared to previous years, despite widespread fireworks use. Tickets were issued across various parts of town. The department emphasized its commitment to addressing fireworks complaints and noted progress in enforcement efforts.
