Commissioner Alleges Politically Motivated Building Violation, Cites Lack of Transparency in Road Construction Notices

Commissioner Broderick expressed significant concerns about a violation notice received from the Fort Pierce Building Department regarding temporary political signs on his property. He asserted that the signs were in compliance with city code and alleged that the action was politically motivated and an attempt to weaponize government against an elected official. He stated his intention to investigate the source of the complaint and noted that the violation was subsequently rescinded after he demanded to go before a special magistrate. He also raised concerns about the lack of advance notice for road construction on Avenue D, creating hazardous driving conditions.

City Rejects Settlement Offer in Keene v. City of Fort Pierce Case Regarding Little Jim Property

A settlement offer was presented from the plaintiff in the case of Keene versus the City of Fort Pierce (Case No. 562025 CA002199). The plaintiff agreed to voluntarily dismiss the case if the city agreed to two conditions: first, that any future lease solicitation or RFP process for the Little Jim property must cure all Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) issues prior to issuing an RFP; and second, that the city would support an amendment to the city charter requiring a county-wide vote for any future land use considerations involving publicly held waterfront lands. Commissioner Gaines moved to reject the settlement offer, stating her opposition to accepting the proposal, while other commissioners noted that addressing FDEP issues would likely be necessary regardless.

Building Department Efficiency Praised; Environmental Concerns Raised Over Aquatic Vegetation Control

Commissioner Gaines commended the Building Department's process for a generator replacement project on her home, describing it as smooth and efficient, with inspectors providing clear explanations and identifying critical safety issues. However, she expressed concern about the city's handling of aquatic vegetative control, citing the importance of the Indian River Lagoon and seagrass, and questioning the potential unintended consequences of the approved contract. She also highlighted the need for the city to ensure best practices are followed in such environmental management.
