Frederick Commemorates 250th Anniversary of Declaration of Independence Reading
The city of Frederick hosted an event on July 8, 2026, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. This event was part of a larger national initiative involving 151 locations across all 50 states, five US territories, and 43 international locations, with readings occurring simultaneously on all seven continents. Additional related events took place in Middletown, Walkersville, Thurmont, and at Kucken Furnace. The historical context provided highlighted that Congress voted to declare independence on July 2, 1776, ratified the text on July 4th, and John Dunlap printed approximately 200 copies of the Dunlap Broadsides overnight. The actual signing of the document with all 56 signatures began in August. The July 8th date specifically marks the 250th anniversary of Colonel John Nixon's public reading of the Declaration in Philadelphia. The document's purpose was to rally troops, win foreign allies, announce a new country, and encourage support against tyranny. The main body of the Declaration consists of 27 grievances against King George III. The event featured 13 readers, representing the 13 original colonies, including local elected officials, community leaders, and representatives from various organizations such as the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, Frederick Youth Council, Asian-American Center, Arch, Maryland Deaf Center, Central Hispano De Frederick, veterans, the Nigerian Association of Frederick, the county executive's office, and a city council member. The event also acknowledged the City of Frederick's communications team for their support. Attendees were invited to enjoy refreshments and obtain copies of the Dunlap Broadsides.
