Residential Fire Suppression Ordinance Amendments to be Considered Following Workshop
The town council is moving forward with proposed amendments to the land use and development code and potentially dissolving the fire suppression system ordinance. The goal is to remove mandatory fire suppression requirements for residential units not mandated by the state of Maine. The ordinance committee has been working on this for years, seeking a balance between housing affordability and fire safety. The proposed order includes a goal of a public hearing in September 2026 for potential implementation by January 1st, 2027. A workshop is planned for August to further discuss the item.
Uncollectible Camper Taxes Written Off by Town Council
The council voted to write off taxes assessed on four campers that are no longer located in Gorum and are considered uncollectible. This action aligns with recommendations from the finance committee.
New Wayfinding Signage Standard Approved for Gorum
The council approved the adoption of a municipal wayfinding signage standard, developed with the assistance of a consulting firm, Beta Group. The standard includes a "Gorum swoosh" logo, inspired by school colors and the former Gorum Economic Development Corporation branding. Implementation will begin with town boundary welcome signs and village interior wayfinding signage, funded by TIF funds. The council agreed to consider using 'founded' instead of 'settled' for the town's founding date on signs and will allow staff to update the font specification for regulatory compliance.
Town Council Writes Off Over $98,000 in Uncollectible Ambulance Billings
The council voted to write off $98,425.69 in uncollectible ambulance billings for Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023. This amount represents bills that have been sent to collections without success. The decision follows changes made in billing procedures a couple of years ago, which have reportedly helped reduce the amount of uncollectible debt over time.
Gorum Transitions to Mechanical Carts for Trash and Recycling This Fall
The town is transitioning from "pay as you throw" trash and recycling totes to mechanical carts this fall, likely in September. Public updates and educational efforts will be rolled out as the transition approaches. Eligible properties will receive the new carts, and participation in the program is optional.
