Decatur County Pursues Blight Funding; ICSC Trip Generates Inquiries for Larger Development

The state is pushing blighted projects, and if approved, Decatur County could receive up to $900,000 for such projects. Positive information was shared about the mayor and Zach's trip to the ICSC event in Las Vegas, resulting in four follow-up meetings and continued requests for information, seven in the last month. However, these requests were for larger buildings and amenities the city currently cannot offer, so no responses were submitted.
New Communications Director Leah Kane Joins City Staff
The council was introduced to Leah Kane, the new Communications Director, who will begin her role on Monday. She previously worked at Joyner Homes and the Greensburg Decatur County Chamber of Commerce. The council expressed gratitude for her joining and relieving the current director of these duties.
City Faces 30-40% Increase in Storm Salt Costs Amidst Supply Shortage
Mark provided an update on the city's storm salt supply for the upcoming winter. Due to issues with vendors bidding and supplying enough material, the state has informed the city that they are on their own to find salt. While the city has enough salt on hand to get through the coming winter due to stockpiling and a new, larger storage facility, the cost is expected to increase by 30-40% on the open market. Vendors are not committing to sell or deliver, possibly due to waiting for higher prices. The salt cost has increased significantly over the years, from $38 to $112 per ton. The shortage appears to be mainly with treated salt, which is more effective in colder temperatures. The state's INDOT garages were prioritized for supply, leaving local public agencies (LPAs) with less. This situation is noted for future financial consideration.
Budget Updates and Aviation Board Resignation
Violetta provided a brief update on solid waste, stating there was no meeting and encouraging attendance at the fair. Daryl mentioned no redevelopment commission meeting occurred. For 911, Rodney and Leanne conducted a virtual email meeting regarding the 911 budget, which will be integrated into the upcoming budget process. An EMA meeting is scheduled later in the month. Bill Ernstus resigned from the Aviation Board due to health issues, and the board will seek a new member. The Aviation Board's budget process is also being managed.
Main Street Farmer's Market Thrives; July 24th Event to Feature Car Cruise-in
Mark provided an update on the Main Street Farmer's Market, noting its full swing with many vendors. The next 'fourth Friday' event is July 24th, featuring extended shopping hours downtown and a car cruise-in. He also conveyed thanks from Ally for the community's involvement in the Independence Day celebration, parade, and flag waving event, noting good turnout for all three.
