Parent Raises Concerns About Support for Students with Disabilities at Ralph Middle School
Marissa Williams addressed the board regarding concerns about her son, Mason Pier, a student with disabilities attending Ralph Middle School. She highlighted that Mason, who is in eighth grade, is denied an intra-district transfer and is struggling with the curriculum at Ralph Middle School, which she believes is not aligned with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Williams described instances of bullying and mental damage her son has endured from both students and staff, including physical altercations and verbal abuse. She proposed that the school implement presentations for students about disabilities to foster understanding and suggested changes to PE classes to prevent further harm. Williams indicated that while the principal is supportive, systemic changes are needed to address the bullying and ensure appropriate education for students with disabilities.
North Clackamus School Board Elects Leadership, Reviews Policies
The North Clackamus School District Board of Directors held its regular meeting where board leadership for the 2026-2027 school year was selected. Director Benaloga was nominated and elected as Chair, and Director Tamarang was nominated and elected as Vice Chair. The consent agenda, including employment changes and minutes, was approved with a 7-0 vote. Board members declared any potential conflicts of interest; Director Walker noted a potential conflict due to working for a company that places exchange students within the district. The board also reviewed proposed policy revisions for FCB (granting easements) and IKE (acceleration and retention), with discussions focusing on clarifying temporary easements and strengthening language around collaborative teams and data use in acceleration decisions. The board protocols and operating agreements were also discussed, with encouragement for members to review Robert's Rules of Order resources. Mandatory child abuse reporting training requirements were also reiterated for board members.
Community Choice Grant Project for Ralph Middle School Grounds Advances
A proposed project, identified as 'treatment of storm water above Kellogg Creek,' which aims to improve storm water management and create an outdoor classroom and new paths on the grounds of Ralph Middle School, received significant public support during the community choice grants voting process. The project, funded by a $3 million Metro allocation for parks and green spaces, was the number four vote-getter in Milwaukee and is part of a broader initiative to fund community projects in Milwaukee, Gladstone, Oregon City, and unincorporated areas. The storm water treatment is intended to filter pollutants, including the toxic chemical 6PD found on tires, before discharge into Kellogg Creek, contributing to efforts to make Kellogg Creek safe and healthy for fish. The project has a two-year design and agreement phase followed by a three-year construction period.
