Updates on 62nd Avenue Project and School Area Traffic Improvements in Johnson

City Administrator Matt provided an update on the 62nd Avenue project, which has commenced. The initial phase involves water main installation, during which the road will remain open. A subsequent phase will close the road for roadway improvements and sanitary sewer installation. Advanced signage will be provided a week before the closure. The duration of the closure is dependent on the water main installation progress, estimated at one to two months, with a potential closure date in mid to late August. Additionally, a project to add on-street parking and lanes east of 54th Avenue to ease congestion during school hours is underway and expected to be completed by the end of July.

Johnson Council Approves Site Plan for United Seeds Inc. Development, Grants Variances

The council approved the site plan for 5600 West, a development by United Seeds Inc., located on Lot 19 of West Park Office Plaza Plat 1. The property, zoned E2 Employment District, required variances for front yard setback (reduced to 25 ft) and Class C architectural materials (increased to 40% on the northern elevation). The site plan exceeds open space requirements and includes necessary plantings. A request to waive the 50-ft landscape buffer along the western property line, due to existing structures and outdoor storage, was also considered. The applicant, United Seeds Inc., is a wholesale distributor of grass seed and storm erosion control materials. No public comments were received.

Johnson Council Member Highlights Community Events and Local Sports Success

Councilman Co. shared his enjoyment of the Johnston girls high school softball team's 11-0 victory over Urbandale. He also highlighted a positive community experience where, due to a faulty PA system, the national anthem was led by the players and crowd singing together, which was considered a highlight of the year. Councilman Co. also praised the city's first summer concert series, noting the large crowd, the band's performance of yacht rock and Bon Jovi tribute, and the community's positive reaction to the free event. He emphasized the value taxpayers receive from such events and encouraged attendance at upcoming concerts.
