July 'Yard of the Month' Winners Announced
Commissioner Abernathy announced the 'Yard of the Month' initiative winners for July. The program, running until the end of October, awards four winners each month with kudos, a yard sign, and a $100 Visa gift card for outstanding landscaping. The winners announced were from 302 Caroline Court, 2421 Fox Barrow Court, 519 West Fifth Street, and 906 Cedar Street.
Commissioner Opposes Public Works Building Acquisition
Commissioner Paneer expressed strong opposition to the acquisition of the Dick Edwards building for public works. She argued that public works facilities should not be located on a main street, citing the Grant Avenue improvements and suggesting the existing facility should be fixed if needed, rather than relocated. She hopes the community will voice their opinions on this matter.
City Commission Approves $3,500 for Harmony Fest
The commission voted to approve a motion to provide $3,500 for Harmony Fest, the same amount provided last year. This decision was made following a discussion where the applicant, Martin Sheree, inquired about the city's sponsorship for the event. Sheree explained the need for funding due to performers requiring deposits and mentioned fundraising efforts including a garage sale and plate sales.
Build Grant Secured with Significant Staff Effort; VA Clinic Progresses
The commission was updated on the Build Grant, a significant grant for Junction City, estimated at $23.9 million. While acknowledging the political involvement in signing paperwork, it was emphasized that city staff and military personnel (Bryce, Ray, Leon, and Fort Riley staff) performed 99% of the work to secure this grant. The VA clinic project, a 46,000 square foot facility, is also progressing, with Senator Moran's office involved and a contractor meeting scheduled.
KBI to Investigate Police Dog's Death; Support Provided to Officers
Assistant Chief Odell provided an update on the tragic death of police service dog Vthos, who was found unresponsive in a K9 patrol vehicle. Preliminary findings suggest heat exposure as the cause. An independent investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has been requested. Support resources, including a peer support team and employee assistance program, have been activated for affected officers.
