Luana City Council Authorizes Negotiation for Continuation of City Assessor Services with Erie County

The Luana City Council convened a special session to consider authorizing the city to enter into negotiations with Erie County for the continued services of Michael Mills as the City Assessor. The current arrangement, where a municipality contracts with the county for assessment services, is permitted under Section 1537 of the Real Property Tax Law. The council moved to receive and file the resolution and subsequently adopted it, authorizing the city administration to begin discussions with the county. If negotiations are unsuccessful, the city will need to conduct a search for a new assessor. This action is a preliminary step required by law before any agreement can be finalized, with a mandatory 45-day waiting period before an eventual agreement can be executed by the mayor.
