EMA Commends Fire Chief for Leadership During Severe Weather Event
Chief Deputy Josh Ferris of the Logan County EMA sent a commendation letter to Chief Johnson of the Lincoln Fire Department for his leadership and professionalism during a severe weather event. The letter highlighted Chief Johnson's proactive planning, collaboration with EMA and dispatch, and communication with his personnel, which enhanced the effectiveness of the response and inter-agency partnership. Chief Johnson accepted the commendation, acknowledging the team effort and the support from the EMA.
Fifth Street Reopens as Phase One; Further Construction and Delays Expected
The council discussed the opening of Fifth Street, which had been closed for several months. The section that was closed is now open, but it is noted that this is only one phase of a larger project with more work to come. For the next month or two, work will focus on the storm sewer system, potentially causing delays due to utility conflicts. Towards the end of the month, asphalt crews will begin working on the section west from Connley Road to the overpass, which will involve milling, filling, and widening the road. While full closures are not expected, there will be delays, and flaggers will be used. The council also discussed Broadway Street, which was scheduled to open on the 10th, with work intended to be completed by the end of the current week.
City Council Approves Appropriations Amendment, Roadway Improvements, Engineering Services, Sewer Project, and Various Grants
The meeting agenda included several consent items and ordinance/resolution approvals. Consent agenda items included payment of bills and approval of minutes from various meetings. Ordinance amendment number one to the appropriations ordinance for fiscal year 2025-2026 was approved. A resolution for roadway street improvements, section number 26-00000099-0000-RS, was approved for an amount not to exceed $520,000 from the motor fuel tax fund. An order approving Crawford Murphy Intelli work order number 20 for engineering services for the 2026-2027 curb and sidewalk program in an amount not to exceed $36,000 was also approved. Additionally, a proposal for the campus view sewer project, not to exceed $1,350,000, was approved. The meeting also covered approvals for economic development commission grants, reinvestment of a certificate of deposit, and the installation of playground equipment (which was tabled).
City Council Approves Grants for Senior Center, Arts Institute, and Home Repairs; Tables Playground Equipment Funding
The council approved an economic development commission grant to Oasis Senior Center for tuck pointing and repairs, not to exceed $6,500. This was part of a series of grant approvals for various projects including roof repairs for the Lincoln Arts Institute and roof replacement for John Roach, as well as garage door replacement for Katie Davis. The council also considered a grant for playground equipment at 8th Street Park but ultimately tabled the discussion.
City Council Recognizes Impact of Youth Work Camp Program
The council discussed community work camp efforts where high school students provided volunteer services. The students worked on projects such as painting and constructing handicap ramps, with support from local businesses like Chicago Rental (providing a lift) and RP Lumber (offering a discount). The work camp had a 100% completion rate within four days, despite rain. Students also assisted with painting in the museum. The program involves participants paying to attend and giving up a week of their time.
