Current chemical handling practices are not compliant with updated permit standards, requiring substantial upgrades. The committee will gather more information and return with recommendations, noting that very few Pennsylvania communities still use fluoride.
Litz Borough Police Sergeant Recognized Nationally for Drug Recognition Expertise
Sergeant Tyler Weinhalt of the Litz Borough Police Department was nationally recognized in the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) 2025 annual report for his work as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). He was one of 17 DREs in the United States to conduct over 50 drug influence evaluations in 2025 and ranked as the seventh most active DRE nationally. This recognition highlights his commitment to making streets safer by addressing drug-impaired driving. Litz Borough has two DREs among the approximately four or five in Lancaster County.
Borough Advances Runabout Line Project; Trail Funding Secured Pending Federal Approval
The managing director reported that the borough has received state approval to move forward with bidding for the Runabout line project. They are awaiting confirmation from Norfolk Southern regarding a pre-bid meeting. The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) has been passed locally and is awaiting federal approval, allocating approximately $900,000 for trail construction in 2029 and 2030. The final missing piece is the acquisition of right-of-way from Norfolk Southern, for which a grant application has been submitted.
Resident Raises Speeding Concerns on Sixth Street; Further Review of Traffic Calming Requested
Resident Bruce Staler raised concerns about traffic speed on Sixth Street, particularly near the roundabout and the intersection of Sixth Street and General Sutter. He requested a four-way stop at Sixth Street and General Sutter, believing previous traffic surveys were taken at incorrect locations. He noted excessive speed coming from the roundabout and suggested studying the entire area. The Chief and engineer explained that four-way stops cannot be used solely for speed control and must meet crash or sight distance warrants, which were not met at that intersection. They acknowledged the concern and agreed to add it to the Streets and Traffic committee's list for review, considering potential traffic calming measures and enforcement challenges.
