Group Urges Lumberton to Divest from Citizens Bank Due to Prison Funding
Peter DiMato, representing Action Together Burlington County, urged the township to investigate its investments with Citizens Bank, which they allege is a major funder of private prisons like Delaney Hall. He noted that other municipalities, such as Hainesport, Mount Laurel, and Mainsport, are withdrawing funds. While the county cited penalties for early withdrawal, DiMato stressed the importance of not investing with banks that behave immorally. He also noted that Senna Mitson has stated no to such investments.
Township Committee Approves Meeting Minutes with One Abstention
The meeting minutes from the regular and executive sessions of June 4th, 2026, were presented for approval. Committeewoman LaPlaca abstained from voting on the executive session minutes, while Committeewoman Smith, Deputy Mayor Faye, and Mayor Benson voted in favor. The motion to approve the minutes passed.
Gallagher Building Handicap Ramp Renovation Approved
The committee considered a proposal for renovations to the handicap ramp at the Gallagher building. The proposal from WJ Gross Incorporated includes demolition and disposal of the existing ramp, excavation, pouring a new concrete ramp, and fabricating and installing handrails. The estimated cost is $54,080 for labor and $51,177 for materials, with completion expected by December 31st of the current year. The improvements will be charged to existing capital accounts. A motion to approve the renovations was passed unanimously.
Concerns Raised About Dangerous Intersection at Ayrstown and Landing Road Following Fatal Accident
During the public comment period, a resident from Mount Laurel raised concerns about the safety of the intersection of Ayrstown and Landing Road following a fatal motorcycle accident. They described visibility issues due to the road's curvature and the placement of the stop sign, suggesting improvements like better lighting or flashing signals instead of just stop signs. A local cyclist also corroborated the difficulty of seeing traffic at this intersection, noting it's on a hill. Ayrstown Road was confirmed to be a county road.
Ordinance Amending EMS Billing Plan Adopted
Ordinance 2026-08, which rescinds and replaces Section 52 and Section 53 of the Lumberton Township Code related to Emergency Medical Services Third Billing Plan and Fees, was adopted. The public hearing was opened and closed with no comments. Committeewoman LaPlaca abstained from voting, while Committeewoman Smith, Deputy Mayor Fay, and Mayor Benson voted in favor.
