Brum emphasized the environmental impact of cigarette butts, stating she collected over 10,000 in May, and each butt contains toxic poison that pollutes water sources.
Marquette Firefighters Brandon My and Jake Phillips Receive Cardiac Life-Saving Award
Fire Chief Ian Davis presented the cardiac life-saving award to relief engineer Brandon My and firefighter Jake Phillips. On October 19th of the previous year, they responded to a medical call initially reported as a fall. They upgraded their response to a priority code upon recognizing potential cardiac emergency indicators. Upon arrival, they confirmed cardiac arrest and initiated advanced cardiac life support procedures in coordination with EMS. Their actions, including defibrillation, airway management, and medication administration, were instrumental in the patient achieving spontaneous circulation and eventual positive hospital discharge. Their efforts exemplify the highest standards of the Marquette City Fire Department.
Marquette Pursues AARP Age-Friendly Community Designation
The city clerk presented information on Marquette's application to become an AARP Age-Friendly Community. This designation aims to improve livability for residents of all ages, particularly older adults, by providing a framework for assessing needs and developing strategies for healthy aging, accessibility, housing, transportation, social participation, and community engagement. The city commits to engaging older adults and stakeholders, conducting a community assessment, developing an action plan, monitoring progress, and sharing best practices. The designation does not create regulatory or financial obligations but offers access to planning resources and technical assistance. The initiative aligns with the city's strategic goals of enhancing residents' quality of life and enabling safe, active, and independent aging. The commission unanimously approved the resolution of support for the application.
Commissioner Hanley Memorializes Fallen Wilderness Firefighter Emily Barker
Commissioner Hanley memorialized Emily Barker, a former NMU student and wilderness firefighter who tragically lost her life while fighting wildfires. Barker was part of the US Forest Service Heltech crew and was one of three forest members to die that weekend. Hanley, who knew Barker, described her as a wonderful person who loved her job, sharing that Barker had educated her about wilderness firefighting. Hanley extended condolences to Barker's friends and family.
