Contract Awarded for Hickory Street Reconstruction Project
The Public Works department is seeking approval for a contract with Prairie Landworks for the Hickory Street Reconstruction Project. Bids ranged from just over $1 million to $1.5 million, with the engineer's estimate at $1.4 million. The approved contract amount is not to exceed $1,465,920. The project, which is the last for the first half-cent sales tax, is slated to begin in mid-August, and a public meeting will be held for affected residents.
Abatement Approved for Nuisance Property on Arcadian Court
The City Council approved a motion for abatement at 105 Arcadian Court, authorizing payment not to exceed $5,000 for the lowest bid to address a nuisance property. This property is a repeat offender with multiple violations dating back to 2023, and the abatement aims to remove blight from the neighborhood. The property owner will be invoiced for the same amount.
July Proclaimed National Parks and Recreation Month
The City Council proclaimed July as National Parks and Recreation Month. The proclamation highlighted the integral role of parks and recreation in promoting health, wellness, physical activity, economic prosperity, and environmental well-being, as well as their importance as resilient infrastructure. Key events for the month include the United Way triathlon on July 25th and National Water Park Day on July 28th.
City Council Reviews Grants Funded by Hotel Guest Tax
The City Council reviewed three grants that were approved at the June CBB meeting, funded by local hotel guest tax. These grants included a $500 visitor attraction grant for the ARC Antique and Flea Market's fall thrift fest, another $500 visitor attraction grant for the ARC's Kansas Barn Sale, and a $500 visitor attraction grant for McPherson Hospital to show the movie N Factor 2.
City Approves Workers' Comp Premium, Announces Revenue Neutral Rate Meeting
The Administration report included approval for the second half of the city's workers' compensation premium payment to Kansas Eastern Regional Insurance Trust, not to exceed $105,114. The city's portion of this payment is approximately $77,000, with BPU and the library also contributing. Additionally, an informational item noted Paige, a staff accountant, received a 20-year service award. A special meeting was announced for July 14th to consider a resolution for exceeding the revenue neutral rate, a yearly process to account for inflation.
