Free Summer Concert Series Continues with Randall Graves Band
Councilmember Sukon announced a free concert by the Randall Graves band on Wednesday, July 15th, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the Matutin Library Park. This event is part of the summer series in collaboration with the MDA. Attendees are advised to bring a blanket or chair.
Main Street Project Begins; Expect Nighttime Closures and Infrastructure Upgrades
The Main Street project is set to commence, involving segmented closures of Main Street starting from tomorrow evening. The work will occur in approximately 100-foot segments at night, from Talmadge to Amboy Avenue. The duration of the closure from Amboy Avenue onwards is uncertain, but the goal is to complete the work efficiently. Challenges include managing numerous utilities beneath the street. From Amboy Avenue to Brunswick, work will be conducted during the day, with the hope of completing all work by the end of summer. This project aims to improve much-needed infrastructure, with collaboration between borough officials, the police department, DPW, Middlesex Water Company, and a contracted vendor. Residents and businesses will be notified of impacts via Nixle and other electronic means.
Human Relations Commission Plans Community Conversations; Recreation Movie Night Rescheduled
Councilmember Branch reported on the Human Relations Commission's plans for a 'Community Conversation on Belonging, Bias, and Support' on September 26th, which will involve creative storytelling and collaboration with the Arts Council. Additionally, a future conversation titled 'What makes a community work?' is planned for October with the library, involving community representatives to discuss roles, challenges, and fostering connection. The Recreation Commission's rescheduled movie night is set for August 8th at Tommy's Pond.
Edgar and Poole Parking Lots to be Paved with Permeable Surfaces; DPW Bulk Pickup Parameters Explained
Regarding the Edgar and Poole parking lots, Borough Administrator Melissa Perlstein clarified that the master plan is a guiding document for the planning board and a visionary tool, not a strict mandate for all projects. She stated that the Agri-parking lot (likely a typo for Edgar) is in very bad shape and will be paved. The plan includes 'shade and permeable surfaces' within the area, which was requested by the engineer to balance paving with stormwater management regulations. The Shade Tree Commission has provided input, incorporating greenery and trees. The school board has also been involved. The project is nearing the bidding stage. The discussion also touched upon bulk pickup and DPW resource allocation, with the Administrator explaining that bulk pickup is labor-intensive, not offered by all communities, and often charged for. Parameters are set on pickup frequency due to limitations and potential for employee injury with manual labor, thus prioritizing non-manual collection methods.
Resident Thanks Officials for Outage Response, Suggests Council Member Quadrant System
Lauren Schnitzer addressed the council regarding a recent power outage on July 3rd that affected her block (Tulsa Avenue) for three days. She thanked the mayor, chief, and DPW for their communication and response, particularly noting the mayor and chief's presence late at night during the outage. Schnitzer also commended PSENG engineers, line crew, and construction crew for their helpfulness and transparency. She suggested implementing a system where each of the six council members is assigned to a borough quadrant to foster community discussions and improve communication during emergencies.
