New Britain Awarded $5,000 DOT Micro Grant for Active Transportation Program
The city of New Britain Public Works has been awarded a $5,000 micro grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation for an Active Transportation Program. The resolution encourages residents, businesses, and organizations to recognize achievements, learn about disability history and culture, and support initiatives for accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunity. The council also promoted the 'Walk and Roll' event on July 22nd and encouraged participation in the Commission on Disability meetings.
Traffic Study for Coolidge and Monroe Street Discussed, Data Methodology Questioned
The council discussed a traffic study for the intersection of Coolidge and Monroe Street. Alderman Simpson raised questions about the methodology, specifically the use of data from September 2024 for a study conducted in April 2026, and the change in stop sign placement in late 2025. A representative from the police department explained that the April 2026 study by CJ used data from Urban SDK, while a prior study in September 2024 by Sergeant Kapowski used the speed spy system. The stop sign at Monroe and Coolidge was removed and moved to Monroe and Harding to create a four-way stop due to the Vision Zero program and student safety in a nearby school zone. The council moved to accept the traffic study.
Willow Street Park Extension Project Fully Funded with Additional Appropriation
The council approved the Willow Street Park Extension Project, allocating an additional $564,443 to cover the full cost. Previously, the council had approved $1,625,000 in bonding for the project on March 26, 2025, which left a funding gap. This additional appropriation will enable construction to proceed. Alderwoman Luna acknowledged former Alderwoman Sanchez as a key advocate for the park's renovation.
Council Approves Tax Abatements, Corrections, and Refunds Distribution
The council discussed and approved item number five, which relates to allowing appropriate tax abatements, corrections, and refunds to be distributed by the revenue collector. Alderwoman Ortiz Luna made the motion to accept and adopt the item, which was seconded by Alderman Barrero. The council urged adoption of this financial measure.
