North Tonawanda Officers Honored for Life-Saving Response to E-Scooter Accident
The City of North Tonawanda recognized four police officers and one off-duty officer for their life-saving actions on June 12, 2026. Lieutenant Eric Herbert, Officer Mary Ellen Parrish, Canine Officer Jeffrey Cam, and off-duty Buffalo State College Police Officer William Ginnock responded to a serious incident involving a 15-year-old student struck by a vehicle while riding an e-scooter. They provided critical life-saving care, including applying tourniquets to control heavy bleeding, until EMS arrived. The student made a full recovery. The officers were commended for their courage, professionalism, preparedness, and commitment to the community. Lieutenant Herbert and Officer Parrish also communicated the incident's severity to school personnel to ensure appropriate support for affected students and staff.
City Authorizes Application for Waterfront Revitalization Grant for Island Street Overlook Project
Community Development received approval for a resolution authorizing an application to the New York State Department of State Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP). The application is for the Island Street Overlook Project, seeking funding for the design and construction of a seating and picnic area near the River Road bike path. The project aims to activate the currently overgrown former paper street, offering views of the swing bridge and future Taunawana Island development. The total project cost is $173,743, with an application for 85% grant funding, requiring a 15% local cash match from the city.
Dilapidated Boats on Sweeney Street Property Mar Bike Path Aesthetics; Code Review Underway
A resident, Kelly Glenna, reported an issue with a property at 1411 Sweeney Street, where approximately six dilapidated boats and gas tanks are stored outdoors, creating an unsightly condition and negatively impacting the appearance of the newly finished bike path. She noted that the property owner, who previously lived on a boat, has moved his boat elsewhere, leaving the property looking abandoned. The city's code enforcement officer acknowledged that current codes may not allow for aggressive action due to the owner possessing the boats, creating a gray area. However, the city is reviewing its codes, including a nuisance code, and plans to address such issues more effectively.
New Appointment to Historic Preservation Commission Questioned, Then Approved
During the public comment period, a resident, Sonia Duza, questioned the qualifications and interest of Courtney Benoir, a newly appointed member of the Historic Preservation Commission. Mayor Tylick explained that Benoir, an architect with the firm Young & Wright, was appointed because she expressed interest in serving on committees and is considered well-suited for the role, potentially fulfilling requirements for expertise in history, engineering, or architecture within the commission. Later, the council voted to approve the appointment of Courtney Benoir to the Historic Preservation Commission.
Park and Rec Praised for Successful 4th of July Celebrations and Kids' Activities
Alderwoman Hilary Rowe thanked the Park and Rec department for the smooth running of the recent fireworks displays and kids' activities, noting the Saturday fireworks quality was superior to Friday's. She highlighted the success of the 4th of July celebrations for the 250th anniversary, emphasizing the large turnout and enjoyment of attendees. She also praised the kids' parade and her participation in handing out ice cream.
