Norwell Seeks $1 Million State Grant for Main Street Sidewalk Expansion
The town is applying for the MassDOT Complete Streets Program grant, which has increased its funding cap to $1 million. The grant is intended to fund sidewalk construction on the south side of Main Street, extending from Dover Street (near the post office) to Bridge Street. The town previously applied for this grant last year with a $500,000 cap, and the current application builds upon a 100% completed design from that submission. The estimated cost for this segment is around $850,000, and the town plans to request the full $1 million to cover potential contingencies and incidentals. Support letters have been secured from the state legislative delegation, Congressman Keating, the Norwell Chamber of Commerce, and MAPC's Transportation Division. The deadline for the application is August 7th. The town is also exploring federal funding options, including the federal version of Complete Streets, potential earmarks, and U.S. Department of Agriculture programs for infrastructure in rural communities. Additionally, the town is considering applying for the Mass Downtown Initiative grant for placemaking and pedestrian infrastructure.
Brian Noble Appointed to Norwell Cemetery Committee; Ann Trubio Named Alternate
The Select Board appointed Brian Noble to the Cemetery Committee for a term ending June 30, 2029. Three candidates, including Judy Volpe and Ann Trubio, applied for one open at-large seat. Brian Noble, currently the Town Manager of Plainville, has prior service on Norwell's School Committee and Finance Committee. He was encouraged to apply by committee members Rick and Chad. Noble noted that due to his role, he is limited in other public service capacities by the Ethics Commission. Ann Trubio was appointed as an alternate to the Cemetery Committee, with her interest in cemeteries described as a hobby. The board will reach out to Judy Volpe to see if she is interested in other committee openings.
Norwell Issues 'Do Not Drink' Water Advisory Due to E. coli Contamination
The town is experiencing an E. coli contamination in its water supply. Initial tests on Monday showed a potential hit, and subsequent tests on Tuesday confirmed E. coli in one sample and a downstream sample. Residents are advised not to drink the water unless boiled, with instructions available on the town's website. Further testing will occur on Wednesday, with results expected Friday morning. Bottled water is being secured, and those in need can contact the water department. The source of the contamination is unknown, but it was detected at an outdoor spigot in front of the central fire station. Restaurants are being notified to either boil water, use bottled water, or close temporarily. The town has mobilized a team including the health agent, water department, highway, police, and fire departments, along with a PR company, to manage communication and response.
