Orangetown Adopts Preservation Fund, Transfer Tax, and Schedules Moratorium on Data Centers

The Town Board of Orangetown adopted three local laws related to establishing a community preservation fund and plan, and a real estate transfer tax, following public hearings and a negative declaration for environmental impact. The preservation fund will allow the town to purchase properties, though not through eminent domain, with a focus on identified parcels that meet specific criteria such as proximity to parks, historical value, or ecological importance. A 0.3% transfer tax will be levied on real estate transactions to fund this initiative, with both commercial and residential properties subject to the tax. The board also scheduled a public hearing for August 25th to establish a temporary moratorium on data centers and battery energy storage systems.
