Front Street Safety Study Presents Recommendations for Roundabouts, Traffic Calming, and Multi-Use Paths

Colliers Engineering and Design presented the findings of a comprehensive safety study for the Front Street corridor, spanning approximately 1.4 miles. The study identified issues and proposed recommendations for intersections and segments, including the Front Street and Louisiana intersection, the corridor between West Boundary and Louisiana, and the East Boundary Street intersection. Recommendations include implementing leading pedestrian intervals (LPIs), upgrading pedestrian hybrid beacons (PHBs), and considering traffic calming measures like medians and curbing. For the East Boundary and Front Street intersection, a roundabout is recommended to address significant congestion and long wait times, with projected improvements to level of service by 2045. Similarly, a roundabout is proposed for the West Boundary and French Street intersection to mitigate congestion from all directions and improve safety. A multi-use path along the north side of Front Street, connecting Louisiana Avenue to East Boundary Street, was recommended to improve connectivity. The study also touched upon potential interim solutions like a four-way stop at East Boundary and Front Street and discussed pedestrian safety concerns regarding roundabouts, suggesting solutions like pedestrian hybrid beacons and pull-away crosswalks. Cost projections were not included due to the multi-year nature of potential implementation.
