Council Demands York Region Assess Infrastructure Capacity for Growing Data Center Demand
Councilor Davidson proposed a motion urging York Region to confirm that its long-term infrastructure planning fully accounts for the growing number of data centers. The motion highlights concerns that the cumulative impact of these data centers on electricity, water, and wastewater servicing may exceed current capacity, potentially delaying growth and requiring revised city planning. The request stems from the lack of a publicly available assessment of these cumulative impacts and the growing demand data centers place on regional resources, such as a proposed 350,000 sq ft data center at Leslie and Orlando expected to use 2.4 million liters of water daily. The motion was passed unanimously.
Revised Development Plan Approved for Young, Brookside, and Noctton Drive Area After Decade of Discussions
A zoning bylaw amendment and draft plan of subdivision application for the property at Young, Brookside, and Noctton Drive in Ward 4 was discussed and approved. The revised proposal, which has been in discussion for about 10 years, significantly reduced the number of units from approximately 1,800 to 800 and addressed concerns regarding building heights, density, park space, and community amenities. The approved plan includes a 37-story building in the Key Development Area (KDA), mid-rise buildings of 7 and 8 stories, townhouses, and a reduced number of community amenity areas. Concerns about traffic, the long negotiation process, and the definition of KDA heights were addressed by staff, who confirmed the proposal's general consistency with the South Brookside Tertiary Plan and the city's planning framework.
City Council Endorses Vishnu Mander Temple's FCM Grant Application for Energy Retrofits
Council unanimously passed a motion supporting the Vishnu Mander Temple's application for a Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Community Building Retrofit Initiative grant. This resolution aims to help the temple secure funding for energy retrofits to its place of worship and building. The motion does not financially commit the city but supports the temple's efforts in reducing emissions, aligning with Richmond Hill's community energy and emissions plan.
Richmond Green Revitalization Master Plan Approved, Outlining Future Park Upgrades
The Richmond Green Revitalization Master Plan was discussed and approved. This plan outlines future improvements and upgrades to Richmond Green park, including new amenities and enhanced connectivity. Key discussions involved the integration of a pickleball facility, parking considerations, noise concerns near residential areas, and the overall balance of various recreational activities within the park. Council members expressed support for the plan as a guide for future development and budgeting. The plan aims to create a dynamic community hub with a wide range of recreational opportunities.
