Salem Town Council Approves Donations, Appoints Commission Members, and Discusses Fire Engine Lease at July Meeting

The Salem Town Council held its July 6th meeting in the old town hall, which has been restored. The council approved meeting minutes from June 15, 2026, and acknowledged several donations including $25 gift cards to Market Basket from the Salem Women's Club for Human Services, $111 in financial donations for Community Services, rubber plate ground mats and flowers/plantings for Hedgehog Park from the Friends of Salem Recreation and the Salem Garden Club respectively, and $500 from Rockland Trust for the Police Department's National Night Out. The council also recognized Heather McGowan as the July Employee of the Month for her consistent dedication in the collections and town clerk's office. Bill Gerardo was appointed as an alternate member to the Conservation Commission, and Jubilee Oberlander was appointed as a regular member to the Historic District Commission. The council also heard a first read of resolution number 2026-13, authorizing a lease agreement for a new fire engine pumper. A public hearing was held for proposed amendments to Chapter 409 of the municipal code relating to solid waste, specifically the elimination of the small business owner haulers provision. The council received updates on water restrictions, traffic safety at North Main Street and Bluff, and the Hampstead Road, Shannon Road, Town Farm Road intersection. Additionally, updates were provided on the community choice irrigation program, regional water discussions with Manchester Waterworks, the FY27 budget process, and capital projects including Irma Road mobilization and the Bridge Street Bridge. Finally, the council discussed discontinuing the water smart customer portal due to low usage and received a complaint regarding the condition of the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
