San Juan Library and Fire Station Designated as Polling Locations for 2026 Elections
The San Juan City Commission approved the Hidalgo County Elections Department's request to use the San Juan Memorial Library and San Juan Fire Station #2 as polling locations for the 2026 general election and general runoff election. Early voting dates are set from October 19th to November 6th, 2026, with additional early voting from November 30th to December 8th, 2026. Voting hours on election days will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
City Discusses Streamlining Weedy Lot Management with External Tax Firm
During the department reports, a discussion arose regarding the process of managing weedy lots. The Planning Department sends notifications to property owners and invoices for city-cut lots, with a possibility of placing a lien on the property if invoices are unpaid. Commissioner Gilbert questioned the process and suggested involving Purdue, a tax firm that already handles city collections, to manage weedy lots and potentially reduce the workload on city staff. The Mayor supported this idea, proposing that Purdue representatives present their services to the commission. There was also a mention of elderly residents and those unable to maintain their yards, with a suggestion to develop a program to assist them.
San Juan Housing Authority Secures $2 Million Grant for New Affordable Housing Project
The San Juan Housing Authority received a $2 million grant from the Texas General Land and Office for the Disaster Recovery Reallocation Program (DRRP) to develop the San Juan Cottages. This project will create a new affordable housing community consisting of seven duplexes, providing housing for 14 families. This development is the first for the San Juan Housing Authority in over 40 years, with the last significant housing development being a farm labor camp approximately 50 years ago. The groundbreaking for the San Juan Cottages is scheduled for the following day at 10 a.m. near Harbor Municipal Park.
San Juan City Commission Appoints Members to Keep San Juan Beautiful and Parks Boards
The San Juan City Commission considered appointments and reappointments to various boards. For the Keep San Juan Beautiful Board, Maria Flores and Alejandro Fernandez were reappointed, filling two open spots following a resignation. Additionally, Jasmine Martinez and Caroline were appointed to the board. For the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, one member was appointed to fill a vacancy.

The City Commission of San Juan officially proclaimed June 2026 as National Cancer Survivor Month. The proclamation was presented by the Oncology Institute at Renaissance and DHR Health, honoring cancer survivors and raising awareness. This declaration encourages citizens to celebrate survivors and support the work towards finding a cure. The event also highlighted the strength, courage, and perseverance of survivors and recognized the support systems around them. The Oncology Institute's recent walk attracted over 1500 participants to raise awareness for various types of cancer.
