The governing body approved an amendment to the general services contract with Vector Airport Systems to extend the term for the collection of aircraft landing fees and parking fees at the Santa Fe Regional Airport until December 19, 2026. Conversely, Lauren Leeb spoke in support of the seasonal closure, citing car congestion as a barrier to accessing the plaza and referencing data suggesting road closures can increase business revenue and pedestrian activity. She believes it would make the city more accessible and encourage infrastructure that reduces reliance on cars.
Councilors Raise Concerns Over Lack of Communication on District Meetings
Councilor Chavez expressed frustration regarding a lack of communication about community meetings being scheduled in her district (District 4). She stated she learned about the Richard's Avenue micro community meeting via Facebook, not through official channels, and that this pattern of insufficient notification has made it difficult to attend and represent her constituents. Councilor Casset echoed similar sentiments about not being kept in the loop. Councilor Garcia noted that District 3 has upcoming events but deferred to Councilor Chavez for details. Councilor Chavez and Councilor Gutierrez further elaborated on the challenges of last-minute notifications and the desire for a more collaborative and transparent approach from the administration.
District 3 Announces Second Annual Back-to-School Bash with Extensive Community Partnerships
Councilor Chavez announced the second annual back-to-school bash for District 3 on August 1st, highlighting partnerships with St. Vincent's Hospital, Girls Incorporated, and The Lensic 360. The event aims to provide children with experiences like snowboarding (donated by Coca-Cola with lessons from Ski Valley), art, and soccer, as well as country club memberships and bikes. Councilor Chavez also emphasized the broad community support from organizations like Anorum, Homewise, Housing Trust, Coca-Cola, Albertson, Sam's, and the Fire Department, noting the goal is to offer opportunities children might not otherwise have.
Community Urges Recurring Funding for Homelessness Prevention
Several speakers addressed the homelessness prevention fund, expressing gratitude for its passage and urging the city council to make such funding recurring. Kathy Garcia of Chambbreaker Collective submitted written comments from members supporting the fund, emphasizing that emergencies leading to homelessness are often preventable and predictable (e.g., from fire, disaster, eviction, or repairs) and that immediate help is crucial. Jaylen Vargas and Kamarina Ton also spoke about personal experiences with needing funding to prevent homelessness due to short notice moves, financial problems, or the strain of housing family members. Ton also highlighted the difficulty this situation creates for children, particularly those with autism, due to disrupted routines, and urged support for public schools and children with disabilities.
