Scituate Select Board Meeting - 07-07-2026
Published: Jul 7, 2026
Town Under Tier 2 Water Restrictions Amidst Increased Demand and Brown Water Issues
The town is currently under Tier 2 water restrictions due to decreased reservoir levels. The water department has issued 37 warnings and 7 violations for non-compliance since July 1st. Meter readers are checking demand overnight to identify and address potential leaks. Brown water complaints have increased, attributed to higher demand and overnight sprinklers altering water flow, as well as iodine in the reservoir water. The new water treatment plant, expected to be operational soon, will be able to treat for manganese, which the current plant cannot. Residents with groundwater issues are encouraged to report them to the water department.
Mary Finnegan Appointed Tenant Board Member for Situit Housing Authority
Mary Finnegan and Lillian OD were interviewed for the Tenant Board Member position on the Situit Housing Authority. Mary Finnegan, a longtime resident and former teacher, expressed a desire to contribute solutions to affordable housing challenges and serve as a voice for residents. Lillian OD, a newer resident, highlighted her 40 years of experience working with elderly, handicap, and individuals with mental illnesses, emphasizing her understanding of needs and compassion. Both candidates attended at least one Housing Authority meeting. The board ultimately voted to appoint Mary Finnegan to the position for a five-year term.
Interdepartmental Transfers Approved; TNC Funds Allocated for Roadway Improvements
The select board approved interdepartmental transfers for FY2026 under MGL Chapter 44, Section 33B. These transfers involve adjustments between line items within existing budgets across the general fund and five enterprise funds. No funds are being transferred from one-time revenue sources like free cash, as this is not permissible. While costs are generally increasing, the sewer enterprise revenue deficit has significantly decreased to $1,200 and is expected to be eliminated with upcoming interest payments. The board also allocated $2,844.60 from transportation network company (TNC) ride-share funds towards roadway improvements.
Busy Fourth of July Weekend Sees 76 Calls for Public Safety; Three Arrests Made
The Fourth of July weekend saw a high volume of calls for public safety, with July 3rd being the busiest day. Police and fire departments responded to 76 calls between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. The police department made three arrests on Friday for DUI, motor vehicle with injuries (driver fled), and violation of a restraining order. Saturday was quieter with one motor vehicle accident. The town acknowledged the efforts of the police, fire, and public works departments in ensuring a safe and clean weekend, and thanked residents for their cooperation in making it a family event.
Kazowski Courts to Undergo Full Reconstruction Under $991,635 Contract with Dandel Construction
The town is seeking approval for a contract with Dandel Construction for the full reconstruction of the Kazowski courts, which are in disrepair. The project involves tearing up and redoing the entire court area, using post-tension concrete for longevity. The existing footprint and fencing will be maintained. The shed will be renovated, and a water bottle filling station will be added. Existing lights and bleachers will remain, but the hoops and backboards, recently replaced by the Situate Basketball Association, will be reinstalled on new standards. A connecting path between courts will be created. Dandel's bid of $991,635 was the lowest and came in under budget. The project is expected to be completed between late September and early October. The court color will closely match the tennis courts.
