Smithfield Transportation Master Plan Update Highlights Future Road Projects and Challenges
JUB Engineers presented an update to the Transportation Master Plan, which was last completed in 2017. The plan, developed with assistance from UDOT and utilizing regional data from CMPO and the North Cache Transportation Plan, identifies current and future traffic needs and recommends projects to improve the transportation network. The plan categorizes roads into functional classifications (Interstate, Arterial, Collector, Local) and sets performance standards (Level of Service D or better). Key areas of concern include the east bench, northeast bench, Main Street, the 250 East corridor, and north-south/east-west connectors. The plan outlines proposed projects for the next five years, including improvements along 1000 East, 800 West, 250 East, 400 North, and 680 North. Future phases include projects like 455 East. The plan also discusses potential for roundabouts, access management, and public transportation. Significant costs are associated with these improvements, and coordination with neighboring cities (Hyde Park, Logan) and the county is crucial for regional connectivity and funding. The plan acknowledges the challenges of Main Street congestion, exacerbated by airport proximity, and highlights an ongoing US 91 study to address this. There is a need for continued dialogue and collaboration with regional partners to implement effective traffic solutions.
Water Line Installation Underway; Road Project Nears Completion; Water Conservation Urged
Several infrastructure projects are progressing. The physical installation of the canyon water line has begun. The floor of the new water tank storage tank has been poured, and walls are being formed. The 925 South Road infrastructure project is 95% complete, with road work to commence after the final piping is installed. Residents are urged to conserve water due to high temperatures (90-100+ degrees) to maintain system levels and avoid restrictions. A new flashing crosswalk sign at 250 East and 800 South has been installed and will be operational soon. The city also acknowledged the vital role of numerous volunteers in various community auxiliaries.
Museum Experiences Steady Activity; Preparations for Temple Opening Underway
Councilmember Todd provided an update on the museum, noting consistent personnel presence and visitor activity since its opening. Groups have visited, and there have been off-hour requests for access. The museum is generating activity, which is a positive sign for the historical society. Preparations are underway for potential increased traffic upon the temple's opening, with ongoing planning for the building's future phases and priorities.
Mac Park Enhances Green Space with 30 New Trees; Park Strip Trees to be Reviewed
Councilmember Todd reported that 30 new trees were planted in Mac Park through a grant from Tree Utah, facilitated by James Hunaker. The trees look fantastic and have significantly improved the park's appearance. The tree committee will meet soon to discuss potential adjustments to park strip tree choices based on park strip width to optimize sidewalk compatibility.
Smithfield Youth Theater Faces Venue Crisis, Seeks Community and City Support
The Smithfield Youth Theater program is facing a crisis due to the loss of their venue at Sky View High School for the month of May. The program, which has been running for 17 years, is a cornerstone of the community, offering an accessible, free, and inclusive fine arts experience for Smithfield children. It fosters confidence, public speaking opportunities, self-esteem, social skills, and inclusivity for all children. The program's current venue at Sky View is no longer available due to school year demands, creating a dilemma about where and when the program can continue. The organization surveyed the community and found strong support for keeping the program in Smithfield. They are exploring alternate venues within Smithfield, such as the civic center or an outdoor space, but these have limitations. Changing the date is also being considered, but presents conflicts with other community events and competitions. The theater group is requesting the city's help in advocating with Sky View to find a mutually agreeable time and exploring options for a dedicated local venue, though this is seen as a long-term solution. Concerns were also raised about the communication from Sky View and a specific incident where the director felt personally attacked by a teacher in front of students. The group also highlighted the mental health benefits of participation and the program's role in community building. They are seeking open communication and a respectful resolution to ensure the program's continuation.
