City of Socorro Pursues Parks Improvement Grant for $1.5 Million Project
The City Council approved Resolution 845, authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Local Parks Grants Program for the Socorro Parks Improvements Phase 1 project. This project aims to upgrade Amistad Park, Callisto Park, and Jardín de Flores Park with improvements such as ADA accessible parking and play areas, playground upgrades, shade structures, walking trails, and athletic play areas. The total estimated project budget is $1.5 million, with the grant covering 50% ($750,000) and the city's certificates of obligation providing the other 50% ($750,000) as the required local match. Community feedback will be gathered through social media, the City of Socorro website, and at the 4th of July event.
Socorro to Research Regulations for Shipping Container Homes and Commercial Use
The City Council directed staff to research and prepare recommendations regarding the regulation of shipping container homes and commercial use within the city. Councilmember Correlo proposed the initiative, envisioning modified shipping containers with windows and doors that meet building standards, potentially serving as housing or commercial spaces like restaurants or businesses. Socorro City Budget Decreased by $270 for Fiscal Year 2025-2026
The City Council approved an ordinance (695 amendment number two) to decrease the fiscal year 2025-2026 budget by $270. City Manager Adriana Valardes explained that the amendment involves relocating appropriations between departments and budget line items to better align with the city's operational needs and expenditures, resulting in a net decrease. The public hearing for this item had no speakers, and the council moved to adopt the ordinance with a motion and second, passing unanimously.
City of Socorro Proclaims July as Recreation Appreciation Month
The City Council recognized the month of July as the City of Socorro's Recreation Appreciation Month with a proclamation. Mayor Rudy Cruz Jr. and the City Council issued the proclamation, highlighting the integral role of recreation in community well-being, health, environmental stewardship, and economic prosperity. Socorro Honors 2026 Youth Development Little League Players and Coaches
The City Council recognized the players, coaches, and staff of the 2026 Youth Development Little League. A video presentation showcased the season's highlights. Laura Arredondo, Wellness Coordinator, spoke about the rewarding season for ages 9-12, emphasizing skill development and enjoyment of the game over a six-week period. She thanked players, families, coaches, volunteers, and sponsors. The players and coaches called to the podium for a group photo included Laura Redondo, Luna E. Fride, Peter T. Friday, Evan Katz, Jorge Manhars, Matthew Cortez, Hector Daniel Moreno, Isaiah Verdeja, Emma Betencourt, Leonardo Arras, Gabriel Manharis, Jack Sporciaga, Emmanuel Smith, Jason Puscar, Ethan Cates, Derek Martinez, Damien Martinez, Benjamin Verdeja, Sean Cates, Dante Jimenez, Nevea Olmos, Jayden Chavez, Angel Grajeda, and Enrique Cisneros. Coaches included Enrique Cisneros, Mario Cerdios, Navea Matsura, Andy Porciaga, Claribel Anderson, Vivian King, Jacob Rivas, and Jacob Vera. The league also celebrated with a pizza party, with certificates and medals provided by Bel de Pizza and Enrique Cisneros Insurance.
