City Secures $1.4 Million Grant for Blue Mile Project Design

Engineering Contract Awarded for Brandon Street and Highway 80 Transportation Project
The council approved a contract with Pate Dawson Consultant Engineers LLC for $256,750 to provide engineering design services for the EMG 130 Brandon Street to U.S. Highway 8 Transportation Improvement Project. This project aims to improve public safety by closing a poorly situated road near Lowe's and constructing a new road connecting Brannon Street and Highway 80. The design phase is necessary to negotiate with property owners for the new road construction. The council also discussed the need for a traffic signal on North Side Drive (Highway 80) and hopes the new project will help leverage DOT resources for this.
FEMA Grant Approved for Lower Lots Creek Basin Study to Address Flooding
The council considered a resolution approving a sub-recipient agreement with FEMA for a hydraulic and hydrologic study of the Lower Lots Creek Basin. The study is prompted by recurring flooding issues in the area. The total grant is $708,780, with a local match of $141,000 from stormwater funds and a state match of $94,500.
Additional Funding Approved for Fire Station 3 Access Road Work
The council approved a change order for $15,700 with Excavating Inc. for additional work on the Fire Station 3 access road. This work is related to the driveway portion of the access road and is funded by T-Splats. The change order covers work beyond the builder's responsibility for concrete, specifically for the driveway.
Resident Raises Concerns About Garbage Can Enforcement and Street Appearance
A resident, Ms. Sue Palmer, expressed concerns about garbage pickup and the enforcement of codes regarding garbage cans. She noted that garbage cans are often left out on sidewalks and in the right-of-way, impacting the appearance of the streets, including main thoroughfares and residential areas like Savannah Avenue and Zara. She urged for better enforcement of existing codes.
