Sturgis Neighborhood Program Highlights Successful Initiatives and Future Housing Projects
Katherine Meyers, Executive Director of the Sturgis Neighborhood Program, provided an update on the organization's initiatives. City Adopts Resolution for Lead Service Line Replacement Project, Securing Grant Points
The commission adopted a resolution committing funding to the DWSRF (Drinking Water State Revolving Fund) LSLR (Lead Service Line Replacement) project plan. This resolution is necessary to gain points for the grant application, specifically addressing the 'dig once' policy which requires the city to commit to redoing the surfacing of roads after lead service lines are replaced. The project involves replacing 477 lead service lines, representing about 31.2% of the city's service lines, with a goal of completing all lead line replacements within 10 years. The current project is budgeted for two years and will focus on specific roads including East Lafayette, East Maine, East Hatch, North Monroe, North Maple, North Fourth, North Prospect, Center Jean, Center Court, Susan Court, Susan, A Sturgis, and George. The city is coordinating lead line replacements with planned road milling and resurfacing projects to avoid re-doing work.
Airport Fuel Discount Approved for Oshkosh EAA Gathering
The city commission approved a discount for 100 low-leaded fuel at the airport to coincide with the Oshkosh EAA General Aviation gathering. The discount is $0.55 off the retail price, bringing the price to $5.68 per gallon. This discount will be effective from Monday, July 20th, to Wednesday, July 29th, covering the travel period for the event, which runs from July 21st to July 26th.
City Approves $10.785 Million Contract for New Natural Gas Generators
The commission approved an agreement for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a natural gas-fueled generator set with Mallister Cat, and a contingency budget for the project. This project involves adding three reciprocating engines with a total output of 7.5 megawatts at the Fawn River substation, utilizing natural gas. Staff has secured a renewable operating permit for the units. A favorable evaluation from Michigan Public Power Agency indicates a net present value of $2.5 million per year for the city through capacity offsets/revenue, savings in transmission costs, and operational benefits in real-time energy markets. Future agreements for operations and maintenance, long-term service, and monitoring/dispatch will be brought to the commission.
