Sugarland Proclaims July 2026 as National Parks and Recreation Month

The city council meeting recognized July 2026 as National Parks and Recreation Month. Director Kimberly Terrell highlighted the city's extensive park system, including 27 parks with over a thousand developed acres and nearly 40 miles of trails. The parks system exceeds peer medians in developed acres per thousand residents, with over four million park visits annually. Program offerings have grown by 42% in the last five years, and resident satisfaction with parks is high at 84.4%. The proclamation acknowledged the integral role of parks and recreation in community well-being, healthy lifestyles, and contributing to the economic and environmental health of the community, noting benefits such as improved water quality, air quality, and wildlife habitat. Residents' requests for more trails, playgrounds, shade, indoor space, senior programming, and events were also noted. The city thanked its parks and recreation staff, volunteers, parks board, council, and residents for their investment.
