The property, totaling approximately 1.11 acres, is currently zoned CG General Commercial in Dorchester County and is requested to be zoned GB General Business upon annexation into Somerville's municipal limits in Council District 1. The item was moved to full council with no recommendation from the finance committee. Councilmembers expressed a need to recuse themselves from voting on items 8A and 8B.
Public Expresses Concerns Over Outdoor Entertainment District Ordinance
During public comment regarding the outdoor entertainment district ordinance, Beverly Parker expressed strong opposition, citing concerns about increased trash, inadequate restroom facilities, potential for increased drinking and driving, and the negative impact on the community's image. She argued against normalizing open alcohol consumption downtown and suggested that Somerville should not emulate other communities solely for revenue. Adrien Quist also voiced opposition, questioning the necessity of alcohol sales for families and the burden on police, and expressed a desire for Somerville to avoid a 'Bourbon Street flavor.' Jim Healey raised concerns about the scope of the OED area, the lack of detailed planning, enforcement challenges, and whether it truly benefits downtown businesses or merely serves bars and restaurants. Karen Healey noted that while an open container policy for specific events might be reasonable, the proposed OED is not. Concerns were also raised about the lack of comprehensive community engagement.

Somerville Council Approves First Reading of Noise Ordinance Rewrite
The council discussed and approved the first reading of an ordinance to amend Chapter 12, Article 2 of the Town of Somerville Code of Ordinances concerning noise. The request and draft were provided by Councilmember Johnson, and the public safety committee moved the item to full council on July 6th. Councilmember Johnson has worked on edits for the first reading.
