City Council Approves Resolution to Seek Federal Grant for East Albert Street Bridge Rehabilitation

The city council discussed adopting a resolution to authorize the mayor to apply for the fiscal year 26 bridge investment program planning and bridge projects grant. The grant is for $4,111,200, and the city would need to commit a 20% local match from its capital budget for fiscal year 28. This grant is intended for the rehabilitation of the East Albert Street Bridge, which is identified as the city's worst bridge. The city has allocated $1.8 million in the capital improvement plan for 2027 towards this bridge, and the required local match of $1,027,800 is less than this allocated amount. The city is also exploring state grant funding to help cover the local match, potentially allowing the project to be funded without city funds. Shoring work was performed in 2023 and 2025 to maintain the bridge's serviceability. Consultants estimate that delaying rehabilitation past 2030 could result in a much larger and more expensive project.
