Weston Approves 5% Increase in Local Business Tax Rates Effective October 2026
The City Commission approved an ordinance on its second and final reading to amend the city's code of ordinances by increasing local business tax rates by 5%, effective October 1, 2026. This increase applies to engaging in business within the city. The ordinance passed unanimously.
Weston Sets Proposed 3.6260 Mil Rate Amidst Property Tax Reform Uncertainty
The City Commission discussed and approved setting a proposed not-to-exceed millage rate of 3.6260 mils for the upcoming fiscal year. This rate is 13.81% above the rolled-back millage rate of 3.1860 mils. The decision to potentially increase the millage rate was made due to uncertainty surrounding proposed property tax reforms that could significantly reduce city revenue in future fiscal years. While the new rate aims to maintain current service levels and avoid dipping into reserves for fiscal year 2027, it is not expected to fully cover potential shortfalls if property tax reform measures pass. The commission acknowledged that the final millage rate in September could be lower if reform measures fail or if other revenue enhancements and cost savings are identified. The decision to set this rate at 3.6260 mils passed with a 4-1 vote.
Weston Amends Comprehensive Plan Following EAR Review and State Mandates
The City Commission conducted a public hearing and first reading on an ordinance to amend the comprehensive plan of Weston. The amendments are based on the Evaluation and Appraisal Report (EAR) and include updates to future land use, housing, infrastructure, conservation, recreation, open space, governmental coordination, capital improvement, transportation, and public school elements. A new property rights element is also being added. These changes were made to comply with Senate Bill 180, which restricts cities from enacting overly burdensome or restrictive laws. Previous amendments deemed too restrictive, such as aligning sanitary sewer and potable water levels of service, have been removed. The ordinance passed unanimously.
Weston Adopts New Zoning Regulations for Assisted and Independent Living Facilities
The City Commission held a public hearing and first reading on an ordinance to amend the city's code of ordinances concerning definitions and land use regulations for assisted living facilities (ALF) and independent living facilities (ILF). The proposed changes aim to establish specific definitions for these facility types, mandate enhanced amenity areas, allow for slightly smaller unit sizes, and adjust parking calculations compared to traditional multifamily buildings. An increase in the permissible impervious area from 60% to 70% is also proposed, aligning with existing developments like The Palace and The Palms. The ordinance passed with a unanimous vote.
Weston Renews IT Services Contract with InSight Public Sector
The City Commission approved the renewal of an agreement with InSight Public Sector, LLC for Information Technology Goods and Services. This renewal covers Microsoft suite products, including Office and Microsoft 365, which support both internal operations and public-facing functions. The renewal was approved under a best interest waiver, requiring a four-fifths affirmative vote, and the contract amount remains unchanged from the previous year and for the following year. The software has been in use for at least 20 years. The measure passed unanimously with all commissioners voting in favor.
