Westport Dissolves Five Inactive or Obsolete Committees
The Westport Select Board voted to dissolve five committees: the ADA Transition Plan Committee, the Open Space Preservation Trust Fund Committee, the Internet Advisory Committee, the Long-Term Planning Town Building Evaluation Committee, and the Public Safety Staffing Committee. The Energy Committee will remain, but its charge and member count will be reviewed. The ADA Transition Plan Committee is obsolete as its duties are now handled by the Commission on Disability. The Open Space Preservation Trust Fund Committee is inactive, and its funding was returned. The Internet Advisory Committee is deemed unnecessary as the Select Board can handle related matters. The Long-Term Planning Town Building Evaluation Committee's charge was collapsed, and the Public Safety Staffing Committee has fulfilled its purpose.
Westport Food Pantry Fundraiser Approved for July 25th
The Westport Food Pantry received a one-day all-alcoholic beverage license for a summer school fundraiser at Weatherllo Farms, located at 845 Sodom Road, on July 25th from 5 PM to 9 PM. The police department recommended approval with the condition that police details be available.
Westport to Increase Parking Fines and Fees, Pursue Special Legislation for Beach Parking
The Westport Select Board discussed and will proceed with scheduling a hearing to increase various parking fines and fees. While beach parking fines are capped at $50 under state law unless special legislation is enacted, other fees below this threshold can be raised to $50. Fines for handicap parking violations remain at $300. The board also decided to place an article on the 2027 town warrant seeking special legislation to increase beach parking fines, acknowledging the recent influx of visitors due to free state beach parking during a heatwave.
Westport Faces Impending Issue with Beach Grove Cemetery Plot Availability
The Beach Grove Cemetery has 203 plots remaining and is projected to reach its limit of 200 plots soon, after which plots can only be assigned to individuals who have already passed away. This presents an impending issue regarding cemetery expansion. The foreman is discussing available plots, and a plan for next steps regarding expansion is scheduled for discussion later in the month.
Westport Infrastructure Committee Addresses Water Line Expansion and Water Quality Issues
The Infrastructure Oversight Committee discussed plans for the expansion of the water line to the Briggs Road Fire Station and potential Phase 2 funding to extend further down Route 6. The committee also addressed water quality issues on South Balt Street and Bryman Road, where residents are experiencing problems with usable water due to contamination from cesspools. The goal is to connect these residents to town water, with efforts to expedite the process for potential fall implementation.
