Yarmouth to Install Narcan Boxes for Public Access
The Yarmouth Police Department, in conjunction with the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod and the Yarmouth Substance Awareness Committee (Weissac), presented a proposal to install Narcan (naloxone) boxes throughout the town of Yarmouth. These boxes would provide accessible, anonymous, and convenient access to naloxone for community members, bystanders, and individuals who may not otherwise have access. The initiative aims to reduce opioid overdose rates by making naloxone readily available. Data from Falmouth, which has installed 14 such boxes, shows a marked decrease in its overdose rate. The proposal includes placing these boxes in public spaces, alongside AEDs or first aid kits, and potentially using QR codes to link users to local services. The board expressed enthusiastic support for the initiative, with the town administrator to work with the AIDS Support Group to identify suitable locations and town departments to facilitate the installation.
Route 28 Upgrades in Yarmouth to Include Roundabout, Enhanced Pedestrian/Bicycle Access
A Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) includes federal construction funding for planned upgrades to 2.9 miles of Route 28 in Yarmouth, from the Airport Road intersection to Parker's River. The project, currently under design by MassDOT, will feature new and updated sidewalks, improved intersections and crossways, and enhanced pathways for pedestrians and bicyclists. A roundabout is planned for the intersection of Route 28 and East Main Street. The Cape Cod Commission transportation staff provides technical assistance to Yarmouth for MassDOT's complete streets programs. Additionally, $25 million in federal funding was secured for improvements to Route 28, with the Cape Cod Commission's support, which is crucial given the project's increasing costs and previous delays.
Yarmouth Collaborates with Cape Cod Commission on Multiple Development Initiatives
The town of Yarmouth has been actively involved with the Cape Cod Commission on various fronts. Dennis Brevinson, representing the commission, provided an update on initiatives including the certification of Yarmouth's local comprehensive plan, work on a regional open space plan, support for wastewater projects through the Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund, updating the hazard mitigation plan, transportation improvements on Route 28, the regional pond monitoring program, the low-lying roads data viewer, and the cultural asset inventory. Board members expressed appreciation for the commission's work and its impact on the town, particularly noting the success in securing $25 million for Route 28 improvements and the importance of the open space plan for protecting water resources.
Entertainment Licenses Approved for Freebird Motor Lodge and Uncommon Hotel with Sound Restrictions
The Select Board approved annual weekday and annual Sunday entertainment licenses for Shrim Inc. (Freebird Motor Lodge) and Harry Hospitality (Uncommon Hotel), with specific conditions. For Freebird Motor Lodge, the licenses permit entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays, and only on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Amplification is permitted, but must be maintained at conversational levels, particularly for recorded music and acoustic instruments, to avoid disturbing neighbors. For the Uncommon Hotel, licenses were approved for Mondays through Saturdays from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., allowing live and recorded music, DJs, and dancing. Amplification is permitted, with the applicant agreeing to maintain sound levels at around 80 decibels and ensure music is directed towards patrons, not off-site. Both venues are expected to host professional acts, and the board emphasized the importance of containing sound within the premises.
