Kearney Approves Sands Construction for Hall Park Project, Allocates Additional Funds
Resolution 51-2026 was approved, authorizing the notice of award and construction contract with Sands Construction Company LLC for the Hall Park project. Due to bids coming in higher than expected, an additional $68,500 will be appropriated from the park fund reserve. While matching funds from LWCF are pending approval (expected in September or October), the city can proceed with construction using reserve funds.
Kearney Authorizes Certificates of Participation for City Hall Renovation, Waterline, and Refinancing
The Board of Aldermen approved Resolution 50-2026, authorizing the offering for sale of refunding and improvement certificates of participation. This action is the first step towards issuing certificates for three projects: the renovation of City Hall, construction of a waterline for the CID, and refinancing the 2024 water tower lease. Refinancing the water tower lease is expected to save $350,000 to $400,000 over its life by reducing the interest rate from 5.5% to just over 4%.
Kearney Celebrates Successful 4th of July Event
The Mayor expressed gratitude to city staff, Kearney Fire and Rescue Protection District, volunteers, and Mr. Scholl for organizing a successful 4th of July celebration. The event included food trucks and contributions from the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. Attendance was estimated to be around 4,000 people, with many visiting food vendors.
Kearney Aldermen Recognize Retiring Economic Development Director and Commend Police Department
Alderman Spencer gave a shout-out to Carolyn Yatsik, the retiring economic development director, thanking her for her service and the momentum she created. Kearney May Financial Report Shows Strong Sales Tax, Cemetery Fund Impacted by Tornado
The May monthly financial report was presented, highlighting a general fund cash balance of approximately $3.4 million, which is $840,000 more than the previous year, attributed to the timing of capital outlay purchases. Citywide sales tax is 11% higher than anticipated in the budget, while marijuana sales tax is 14% lower year-to-date. Interest income is trending lower than last year, as budgeted. Expenditures for the cemetery fund are impacted by the earlier tornado, with spending at 70.98% of the annual budget due to tree removal costs.
